After the rescue mission of 1980 had failed and, President Carter was not voted back into office by the American citizens, the new President, Ronald Reagan started devising a plan to retrieve the hostages from Iran.  After Iran's former leader "The Shah" had died, the negotiations between the American government and the Iranian hostage takers became less demanding.  Allegations were surfacing against former President Carter for apparently secretly meeting with Iran and negotiating with them for the hostages, but the allegations were brought up too late and after the election of 1981, which might of gave Carter an edge in the election, almost guaranteeing him another 4 year term in office.  After Reagan had won the election, the day of his inauguration was a significant day in the American's history. Immediately after President Reagan was inaugurated, 444 days after the U.S. citizens were taken hostage they were released and placed into American custody, this time for good.  Once the hostages were released and back into the U.S.A., the Iran Hostage Crisis ended.
